Vietnam attaches importance to comprehensive partnership with US

VOV.VN - Vietnam attaches importance to the comprehensive partnership with the United States, which is one of Vietnam’s important partners bilaterally and globally, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue said at a reception for US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper on August 25.

Hue noted that despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, bilateral relations have developed substantially and reaped positive gains, especially in trade-economics and investment.

He thanked the Government and people of the US for supporting Vietnam in the COVID-19 fight, and US businesses for their continued trust in the country.

The NA Chairman briefed his guest on Vietnam’s encouraging results in COVID-19 control and economic recovery, saying Vietnam has gradually brought the virus under control and the economy has been back on track with GDP expanding 7.7% in the second quarter.

Such gains could not be recorded without great contributions by foreign investors and businesses, including those from the US, he stressed.

As the two countries hold great potential for stronger cooperation, Hue suggested that Ambassador Knapper and the US Embassy in Vietnam continue to pay attention to promoting high-level visits and phone talks between senior leaders of the two countries.

He also suggested that the Ambassador during his working term play his role in further developing legislative ties of the two countries commensurate with the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership.

For his part, Ambassador Knapper shared that many Congress members are keen to develop the Vietnam-US relations and the ties between the two countries’ legislative bodies.

He revealed that Senator Patrick Leahy, who is currently president pro tempore of the US Senate, and former US Senator John Kerry, who is US Presidential Envoy for Climate, would visit Vietnam later this year. He wished to work closely with agencies of the National Assembly of Vietnam to ensure the success of these visits.

Knapper also announced that the US House of Representatives is to establish the US-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group to connect US lawmakers who are interested in Vietnam, so as to promote exchanges between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
