Vietnam and UAE sign defence cooperation document

VOV.VN - Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a Letter of Intent on Defense Cooperation, outlining orientations for substantial defence cooperation between the two countries.

The document was signed in Abu Dhabi by Lieutenant General Ibrahim Nasser Al-Alawi, Deputy Minister of Defence of the UAE and Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defence of Vietnam, during the latter’s recent working visit.

During their meeting held earlier, Chien emphasised that this was the first official visit by a Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence leader to the UAE. He expressed his belief that the issues discussed during the meeting would lay a foundation and provide important direction for the development of bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries in the near future.

He was pleased to note that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1993, the Vietnam-UAE relationship has continuously developed strongly. Notably, during the official visit to the UAE by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in October 2024, the two countries upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, thereby creating a solid political foundation for comprehensive cooperation in various fields, including defence.

The Government, Ministry of National Defence, and the Vietnam People's Army always attach importance to strengthening the friendship and promoting substantive cooperation with the UAE Government, Ministry of Defence, and Armed Forces, in line with the legitimate interests of both peoples and for peace, stability, cooperation, and development in each country, the region, and the world at large, said Chien.

He highly appreciated the positive developments in bilateral defence cooperation in recent times, especially in terms of delegation exchanges at various levels. Both sides have actively supported and sent delegations to attend international defence exhibitions, conferences, and seminars organized by each other.

Affirming the great potential for defence cooperation between the two Ministries of Defence and Armed Forces, he hoped that Vietnam-UAE defence relations would continue to be promoted in the coming time, focusing on areas such as high-level delegation exchanges; the establishment of mechanisms for dialogue and consultation; defence industry; training; United Nations peacekeeping operations; maritime security; military medicine; logistics; academic research; non-traditional security; as well as mutual consultation and support at multilateral forums and events to be organised by each side.

Lieu. Gen. Ibrahim Nasser Al-Alawi and Sen. Lieu. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien stressed the importance of the Vietnam-UAE Comprehensive Partnership, in which defence cooperation should be developed to strengthen mutual trust and drive collaboration in diplomacy, economy, and culture. Both Deputy Ministers shared many common views on building self-reliant armed forces and defence industries.

Chien respectfully invited the UAE Ministry of Defence to send a delegation to visit Vietnam. The UAE Deputy Minister of Defence confirmed that a delegation would visit Vietnam to promote and concretise the issues discussed by both sides and cordially invited the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence to send a delegation to attend the Dubai Airshow 2025 and the Dubai International Air Chiefs' Conference (DIACC) 2025, scheduled for November this year.
