Vietnam and Thailand rev up defense cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Thailand will increase defense cooperation in tandem with the enhanced strategic partnership between the two countries.

The two sides will focus on increasing a regular exchange of visits and effectively maintaining their current cooperation mechanisms, including the defense policy dialogue, in order to strengthen the trustworthy relationship between the Ministries of Defense and the armies of the two countries.

The agreement was reached during the fifth defense policy dialogue co-chaired by Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense of Vietnam and General Sanitchanog Sangkachantra, Permanent Secretary for Defense of Thailand, in Hanoi on December 13.

The two sides agreed to promptly consult and share views on issues of mutual concern, promote cooperation between armies and units, especially between their maritime law enforcement forces, and enhance cooperation in human resource training.

They consented to expand cooperation in a number of potential fields suitable to the needs and strengths of each side, such as logistics, military medicine, and response to non-traditional security challenges, search and rescue, among others.

They vowed to actively consult and support each other within the ASEAN military and defense framework, while maintaining ASEAN’s common stance on regional and international security issues.

During the dialogue, the two sides reviewed and acknowledged the encouraging results in carrying out defense cooperation activities between Vietnam and Thailand following the fourth defense policy dialogue. They also emphasized the need to handle disagreements through peaceful measures in line with international law.

On the occasion, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien respectfully invited leaders of the Ministry of National Defense and businesses of Thailand to attend the Vietnam International Defense Expo 2024.
