Vietnam and Italy eye upgrade of bilateral relations
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Italy are looking to upgrade their Strategic Partnership, with both sides emphasising expanded cooperation in innovation, artificial intelligence and high-tech sectors.
The view was shared during a meeting in Rome on April 14 between Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, who was on an official visit to Italy and Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
Man conveyed greetings from General Secretary and President To Lam to President Sergio Mattarella, while congratulating Italy on its recent achievements under his leadership.
He stressed that despite geographical distance, Vietnam and Italy share profound similarities in culture and historical struggles for independence, which serve as a solid foundation to further advance their Strategic Partnership and move toward upgrading bilateral ties in the future.
To realise this goal, the Vietnamese leader called for stronger engagement between legislative bodies, particularly in overseeing the implementation of bilateral and multilateral agreements.
He also stressed the need to expand cooperation into forward-looking sectors where Italy has strengths and Vietnam has growing demand, including science and technology, artificial intelligence (AI), innovation, and high-quality human resource development.
Welcoming the Vietnamese delegation, Mattarella described the visit as highly significant, noting that it is the first visit to Italy by a key Vietnamese leader following Vietnam’s recent elections and state apparatus consolidation.
Expressing confidence that the visit would generate new momentum for bilateral ties, he underscored the importance of boosting two-way trade, a key pillar of cooperation with substantial untapped potential. In addition, he encouraged expanding collaboration in fashion design, culture, tourism, and education.
Discussing global and regional developments, Mattarella noted the importance of upholding peace and strongly supporting multilateralism.
Both leaders agreed to enhance coordination and mutual support at international and regional organizations, particularly the United Nations. They reaffirmed their shared stance on resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law.
