Vietnam actively builds independent, self-reliant economy linked to global integration

VOV.VN - Vietnam is steadfast in its direction and is promoting the building of an independent and self-reliant economy closely linked to proactive international integration in an extensive, substantive and effective manner.

Vietnam has also engaged in many international economic integration initiatives, actively and responsibly contributing to joint efforts to accelerate economic recovery and sustainable development in the region and around the world.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was speaking while virtually attending the launch of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity ((IPEF) in Tokyo (Japan) on May 23.

He emphasized the need to adjust the growth model and economic connectivity in a more sustainable and more self-reliant manner by making the most of internal resources and optimizing external resources, upholding multilateralism and strengthening international solidarity on the basis of sincerity, trust and responsibility.

The launch of the IPEF will kick-start serious discussions and encourage countries to work together to address important regional and global issues such as supply chain diversity & sustainability, technology innovation, digital transformation, e-commerce, climate change response, greenhouse gas emission reduction, green growth, as well as tax and anti-corruption issues, he said.

According to the Vietnamese leader, IPEF discussions require a cooperation framework that brings practical benefits to the people. This must be an open, inclusive, balanced process, in line with international law and the legitimate interests of stakeholders.

Vietnam will work closely with other ASEAN countries and relevant partners to continue discussing and clarifying the connotation of cooperation pillars, bringing a positive, effective and feasible economic agenda for the region and for each country, for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation, development, and prosperity in the region and around the world, he stressed.

At the ceremony, leaders of the US, Japan, India, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand and others shared their vision for an open, inclusive, equitable, rules-based, connected, resilient, secure, and prosperous Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific that serves as the driving force for the global economy while upholding the central role of ASEAN.

The leaders also emphasized the urgency of working closely together to ensure economic recovery and development on an adaptive, sustainable and inclusive basis. At the same time, they affirmed the importance of enhancing economic competitiveness, transparency and anti-corruption, maintaining essential supply chains, promoting economic growth, creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities for the people.

The leaders agreed that upcoming discussions for the IPEF will be focused on four pillars: (i) trade; (ii) supply chain; (iii) clean energy, decarbonization and infrastructure; and (iv) taxation and anti-corruption. They expressed their willingness to welcome other countries in the region to join the framework if they show interest in.
