US Senator Tammy Duckworth visits Vietnam

VOV.VN - Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Tran Quang Phuong on July 17 received US Senator Tammy Duckworth who is in Hanoi for a working visit to Vietnam.

Phuong welcomed Duckworth’s visit which he said demonstrates the Senator’s desire to further cultivate the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.

The Vice Chairman of the National Assembly expressed his joy at the positive development of relations between the two countries and the two parliaments in recent times.

Duckworth for her part affirmed that the visit shows the US Senators delegation’s respect for promoting relations between the two countries and the two parliaments.

She appreciated Vietnam’s leading role in ASEAN and emphasized that the US wishes to increase its presence in the region and to cooperate more closely with Vietnam, thereby contributing to ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

She revealed that in the US Congress, there is a group of young senators who succeed their predecessors in cultivating and supporting the promotion of US-Vietnam cooperation. She expressed her belief that the two sides would have practical and meaningful visit exchanges to help further relations between the two countries and the two parliaments.

According to the US Senator, the US Congress recently passed a number of bills to open up opportunities for cooperation between the US and other countries in manufacturing electrical transformers, electrical equipment in solar cells and super-chip circuit boards, and the US is seeking countries, including Vietnam, for cooperation in these fields.

She said universities of the two countries will also have great potential for cooperation in research and development of green technology, renewable energy, innovation in the coming time, contributing to spurring economic development between the two countries, while addressing climate change challenges.

She has put forward a cooperation initiative between the Mekong and Mississippi rivers, to promote cooperation between relevant forces of the two countries in preventing landslides on both sides of the river, effectively managing and using river resources, and managing inland waterway activities.

Vice Chairman Phuong welcomed Duckworth’s proposals and hoped that the US Congress would support and create conditions to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in these fields.

Vietnam always considers the US one of its most important partners, and it appreciates the US’ consistent policy of supporting a strong, independent, and prosperous Vietnam, stressed Phuong.

He said that the National Assembly of Vietnam continuously makes timely decisions to create favourable conditions for foreign businesses, including US businesses, to invest in the country.

He expressed hope that the two countries would continue to increase cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war, while proposing that the US soon recognize Vietnam’s market economy status.

Phuong affirmed that Vietnam considers cooperation between the two parliaments as one of the pillars in bilateral relations, and the National Assembly of Vietnam highly appreciates the US Senate and House of Representatives as well as Senator Tammy Duckworth personally making positive contributions to promoting bilateral relations.

He proposed that the two sides enhance exchanges between the two legislative bodies in the fields of legislation, supreme supervision and decision-making on important issues to celebrate 30 years of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and the US in 2025.
