US Security Adviser O’Brien to visit Vietnam this week

VOV.VN - US House Security Adviser Robert C. O’Brien will make an visit to Vietnam this weekend to celebrate 25 years of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and the US.

Le Thi Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, confirmed the news at a regular press briefing in Hanoi on November 19.

O’Brien is scheduled to meet several leaders of Vietnamese ministries and agencies to exchange views regarding bilateral relations, as well as regional and global issues of mutual concern, hang told reporters at the press briefing.

The White House said on November 18 O’Brien is making a tour of Vietnam and the Philippines.

The National Security Council of the US earlier tweeted O’Brien will meet leaders of both countries “to reaffirm the strength of our bilateral relationships and to discuss regional security cooperation.”

O’Brien represented President Donald Trump to attend the 8th ASEAN-US Summit virtually hosted by Vietnam on November 14.

During the event, he voiced the US support for ASEAN’s community building efforts, which he said are in line with his country’s interests as they make an important contribution to the joint strategic partnership.

O’Brien’s visit to Vietnam comes hot on the heels of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s trip to Hanoi in October where he affirmed the US’s support for stronger economic and trade ties between the US and Vietnam.
