US requested to remove Vietnam from Special Watch List on religious freedom

VOV.VN - Vietnam regrets that the US has designated Vietnam as one of the countries on its Special Watch List regarding religious freedom, and requests it to remove the country from the list.

Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, was speaking at a regular press briefing in Hanoi on January 11.

Vietnam’s consistent policy is to respect and ensure the human rights and freedom of religion and belief of the people. This is clearly prescribed in the country’s 2013 Constitution as well as its legal system, and practiced in reality, said Hang.

According to the spokesperson, Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in ensuring human rights, including ensuring freedom of belief and religion, have been recognized by the international community in recent times.

The spokesperson asked the US to remove Vietnam from the Special Watch List, and move to have objective assessments based on accurate and comprehensive information about the actual situation in the country.

Vietnam is ready to discuss with the US issues of mutual concern in the spirit of frankness, openness and mutual respect, contributing to promoting the comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development between the two countries, said Hang.
