US requested to open wide market for Vietnamese farm products

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, while receiving US Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack on April 19, asked the US to further open its market for Vietnamese farm products, including coconut and passion fruit.

He requested that the US help Vietnam set up irradiation facilities in the North to facilitate the export of licensed lychees, mangos, pomelos and dragon fruit to its market.

He called on the US to remove unnecessary technical barriers, assist Vietnam in building standardized raw material areas, and encourage US businesses to invest in agricultural production in Vietnam.

Vietnam is ready to open its market for US farm products to reach out to its consumers, Chinh assured Vilsack.

The PM also proposed that the US Department of Agriculture strengthen cooperation and support Vietnam in green transformation, climate change adaptation, technology transfer, disease control, research and production of vaccines, plant protection drugs, animal feed, as well as in human resource training for the agricultural sector.

Vilsack for his part affirmed that the US wants to bolster bilateral cooperation with Vietnam, including in the field of trade. The two sides he said cooperate and share experiences in agricultural development, especially smart agriculture and climate change response.

He acknowledged the PM’s proposals and said he would work with relevant agencies of the two countries to realize those proposals, including one to set up irradiation facilities in the North of Vietnam.

Both host and guest expressed satisfaction at the growing ties between the two countries, in which economic and trade cooperation plays an important role.

Last year saw the import-export turnover of agricultural products between the two countries hit US$15.36 billion. Currently, the two sides are actively promoting a cooperation programme to produce the African swine fever vaccine.

At the reception, Chinh affirmed in its foreign policy Vietnam always considers the US as one of its top important partners, and it wishes to promote the comprehensive partnership with the US.
