US lawmakers back deeper Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam
VOV.VN - US lawmakers reaffirmed Vietnam’s importance in regional and global policy and voiced strong support for the substantive implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, during their meetings with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong in New York on September 23 (local time).

Representative Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, affirmed that the United States views Vietnam as one of its key partners in Southeast Asia, noting that the bilateral relationship is a model of reconciliation and healing after war. He pledged to further promote parliamentary exchanges and legislative dialogue, while committing to advocate for sustained US Congressional resources for humanitarian projects, dioxin remediation at Bien Hoa airbase, unexploded ordnance clearance, and assistance to people with disabilities in Vietnam.
Representative Young Kim, Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Indo-Pacific Subcommittee, highlighted the bridging role of the Vietnamese-American community and welcomed the expansion of bilateral cooperation in critical areas such as trade, education and training, people-to-people exchanges, and business connectivity.
Senator Chris Coons, senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stressed that the US Senate strongly supports advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, particularly in war legacy remediation, education, and training – the areas he considered foundational for building lasting trust.
He pledged to carry forward the tradition of earlier generations of US legislators and emphasised the important role of Fulbright University Vietnam in helping the country develop high-quality human resources for sustainable growth.

For his part, President Luong Cuong welcomed the robust growth of bilateral ties and the substantive outcomes achieved since the upgrade of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023. He reiterated Vietnam’s commitment to pursuing an independent, self-reliant foreign policy of multilateralisation and diversification, regarding the United States as a strategic partner of importance, while building an independent, resilient, and deeply integrated economy.
The President also expressed appreciation for US Congress and Government support in humanitarian cooperation and war legacy remediation, and called for expanded cooperation in trade and investment, high technology, renewable energy, and green transition. He underscored the need to further strengthen parliamentary exchanges, legislative experience-sharing, and dialogue between the two legislatures.
Both sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern. US lawmakers reaffirmed their support for ASEAN centrality and stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation in ensuring peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
President Luong Cuong voiced Vietnam’s support for continued US–ASEAN cooperation on global challenges such as climate change, maritime security, and sustainable development, as well as coordination in multilateral forums.
The meetings that took place on the sidelines of the High-Level General Debate of the 80th UN General Assembly reflected the strong resolve of both sides to deepen the Vietnam – US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and beyond.
