US diplomat optimistic about Vietnam – US cooperation prospects

VOV.VN - Daniel Kritenbrink, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, says Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s May 11-17 working trip to the United States has offered good prospects for the two countries to foster bilateral cooperation.

Addressing a press briefing on May 17, Kritenbrink said that the United States was honored to welcome PM Pham Minh Chinh and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to the ASEAN-US special summit, considering this a great opportunity for the Vietnamese leader to hold talks with leaders of the United States and other leaders of the Southeast Asian region.

According to the diplomat, PM Chinh delivered speeches at various meetings, focusing on climate change response, COVID-19 prevention and control, and efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, including maritime security, among others.

He described the meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and PM Pham Minh Chinh as productive, representing the strong partnership the United States has built with Vietnam.

The meeting covered a wide range of substantial issues related to the common interests of the two countries and their peoples, he said.

Meanwhile, Senior Director for East Asia and Oceania at the White House National Security Council, Edgard Kagan, emphasized this time the ASEAN-US special summit is an important opportunity to promote the US-ASEAN relations, including Vietnam.

US President Joe Biden enjoyed talks with ASEAN leaders, during which he reaffirmed the US commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with countries in the region, said Kagan.

Also at the press conference, the two US diplomats also answered many questions fielded by media workers press about the importance of the US-ASEAN relations following this special summit.

They shared the view that the activities of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Vietnamese delegation during the ASEAN-US special summit presented a good opportunity to promote future cooperation between ASEAN and the United States as well as between the United States and Vietnam.

President Joe Biden hosted ASEAN leaders in Washington DC on May 12-13 for a special summit between the United States and ASEAN, marking 45 years of the relationship between the two sides.
