UNDP pledges support to Vietnam’s climate action plan

VOV.VN - The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is ready to support Vietnam in realizing its net zero emissions commitment by 2050 and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), UNDP administrator Achim Steiner told Vietnamese Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan.

Meeting Xuan in New York on March 11, Steiner said that UNDP would also help Vietnam accelerate the decarbonization process and ensure access to affordable clean energy, while acting as a bridge between Vietnam and international donors, as well as between Mekong River basin countries to support Vietnam in meeting the set goals.

The UNDP administrator congratulated Vietnam on the great achievements it has recorded in recent times, which he said serve as a source of encouragement and practical contributions to the implementation of the United Nations’ priorities.

Xuan, who is in New York for the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), highly appreciated UNDP’s leading role in the UN development system, especially in promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

She thanked UNDP for accompanying and supporting Vietnam in national construction and development for the past nearly 50 years, with total aid reaching nearly US$1 billion.

The Vice President singled out UNDP for its close cooperation in implementing the Vietnam-UNDP Cooperation Program for the 2022-2026 period, as well as in a draft plan to mobilize resources for the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

She requested that UNDP continue to actively assist Vietnam in finance, policy advice and capacity building to implement the priority policies, and to gather international support to effectively and sustainably manage and use Mekong River water resources.
