Top leader’s Philippines visit grabs regional headlines
VOV.VN - International and Philippine media outlets have described Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s State visit to the Philippines as a significant milestone in bilateral ties, opening new opportunities to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
The Philippine Star noted that this is not only the first State visit to the Philippines by a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, but also comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam-Philippines Strategic Partnership.
According to the newspaper, the visit is expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral cooperation in various fields while reflecting the shared determination of both countries’ leaders to further strengthen Vietnam-Philippines relations in a new phase of development.
The report also cited Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as expressing interest in expanding cooperation with Vietnam, particularly in defence and maritime affairs, while highlighting that Vietnam is currently the Philippines’ only strategic partner within ASEAN.
Other Philippine media outlets, including GMA News, Inquirer.net and Manila Bulletin, also described the visit as an opportunity for the two countries to enhance collaboration in trade, investment, food security, defence, education, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
According to these media organisations, discussions between the two leaders demonstrate a strong commitment to making the Vietnam-Philippines Strategic Partnership more substantive and effective in the years ahead.
In a commentary published in the Manila Times, researcher Ei Sun Oh said Vietnam is emerging as one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic economies while increasingly taking a more proactive role in regional affairs. The article noted that Party General Secretary and President To Lam’s visit takes place as Vietnam’s international standing continues to rise alongside strong economic growth and growing foreign investment inflows.
From a regional perspective, the South China Morning Post commented that the visit to Manila underscores Vietnam’s continued emphasis on relations with ASEAN member states and its balanced foreign policy approach. The newspaper quoted analysts as saying that Vietnam and the Philippines are placing greater focus on shared interests in economic cooperation, security and maritime collaboration, alongside strengthening coordination on regional issues of common concern.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the visit comes as the Philippines seeks to expand regional partnerships and strengthen security cooperation. According to Reuters, high-level talks are expected to focus on trade, security and maritime cooperation. The news agency also noted that Vietnam and the Philippines have expanded cooperation between their naval and coast guard forces in recent years.
Assessments from Philippine and international media reflect expectations that the Vietnamese leader’s State visit will provide new momentum for the Vietnam-Philippines Strategic Partnership, contributing to stronger bilateral cooperation as well as greater ASEAN solidarity, regional stability and sustainable development.
