Vietnam-Philippines ties poised for new chapter as top leader To Lam begins state visit
VOV.VN - More than just a milestone marking 50 years of diplomatic relations, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s state visit to the Philippines is expected to open a new chapter in the Strategic Partnership between the two countries for decades to come.
A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse began a two-day State visit to the Philippines on May 31 at the invitation of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos.
The trip marks the first-ever visit to the Philippines by a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and comes as the two countries prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
The visit is not only an opportunity for both sides to reflect on decades of cooperation, but also a chance for senior leaders to shape a long-term vision for bilateral relations in the years ahead.
Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Theresa Lazaro described the visit as a historic milestone in bilateral ties. She said the trip carries both strategic and symbolic significance, providing an opportunity for leaders of the two countries not only to celebrate five decades of cooperation, but more importantly to build a shared vision for the future.
That expectation has also been highlighted by international media. The South China Morning Post (Hong Kong-China) noted that the visit comes at a particularly important moment in bilateral relations, creating momentum for expanded cooperation in key areas such as trade, food security, defence, maritime affairs, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
The newspaper also pointed out that Vietnam is currently the Philippines’ only strategic partner within ASEAN.
From Vietnam’s perspective, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong said the visit is expected to allow leaders of both countries to discuss major strategic directions for cooperation while further strengthening political trust - a key foundation for bilateral relations in the next phase.
According to Cuong, economic cooperation is expected to become one of the key pillars of Vietnam–Philippines relations in the coming years, alongside traditional areas of cooperation.
Half a century after establishing diplomatic relations in 1976, Vietnam and the Philippines have developed comprehensive cooperation across multiple sectors. The establishment of the Strategic Partnership in 2015 laid the groundwork for deeper collaboration in politics, economics, defence, security and people-to-people exchanges.
In recent years, economic ties have continued to expand steadily. Philippine companies have invested in Vietnam in sectors including food production, renewable energy, infrastructure, water supply and port operations. Educational, cultural and tourism exchanges have also become increasingly vibrant thanks to growing direct air connectivity between the two countries.
Beyond trade and investment, the Philippines also expects the visit to help broaden cooperation in emerging strategic areas. According to Secretary Theresa Lazaro, the two countries have significant potential to strengthen coordination on maritime issues, maintaining peace, stability and freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The two sides also see opportunities to expand cooperation in sustainable marine resource management, scientific research, environmental protection and responses to both traditional and non-traditional security challenges.
With political trust continuing to deepen, shared strategic interests and ample room for further cooperation, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s state visit to the Philippines is anticipated to inject new momentum into bilateral ties and usher Vietnam–Philippines relations into a more substantive and far-reaching phase of development for decades ahead.
