Top Lao leader Thongloun Sisoulith to pay State visit to Vietnam

VOV.VN - The General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse will make a state visit to Vietnam from September 10 to 13, according to the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations.

The invitation has been extended by the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President of Vietnam To Lam, the commission said in a communique released on September 5.

The political and diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Laos have developed positively in recent times, characterized by close ties and mutual trust. In mid-July, in his capacity as the head of state, To Lam paid a successful visit to Laos. The two leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to continuously developing the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.

Defense, security, and foreign affairs cooperation plays a crucial role in bilateral relations.

Economic, trade, and investment cooperation has reaped encouraging results. Vietnam currently has 241 investment projects in Laos with a total registered capital of over US$5.5 billion, maintaining its position as the third-largest foreign investor. Two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Laos reached US$779.6 million in the first five months of 2024, an increase of 11% compared to the same period in 2023.

There are approximately 14,050 Lao students studying at more than 170 educational institutions in Vietnam. Cooperation between localities, especially those with shared borders, is enhanced across all areas, ensuring security and safety in the border regions of both countries.

Both sides closely coordinate and mutually support each other at regional and international forums, especially within ASEAN, the United Nations, and the Mekong sub-region.

Vietnam vows to actively cooperate with and support Laos in successfully taking on international responsibilities in 2024, including its role as ASEAN Chair and Chair of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) 2024.
