Timor-Leste PM affirms Vietnam as close friend, seeks stronger cooperation
VOV.VN - Prime Minister of Timor-Leste Xanana Gusmão has affirmed that he regards Vietnam as a close friend and trusted partner, expressing a desire to further strengthen practical cooperation across key development sectors.
The remarks were made during his meeting with Vietnamese Chargé d’Affaires in Timor-Leste Pham Binh Dam at the Government Office on April 23.
Recalling his fond memories of previous visits to Vietnam, Prime Minister Gusmão highlighted the strong bond of friendship and mutual trust between the two countries, and voiced his hope for expanded cooperation in areas aligned with Timor-Leste’s development priorities, including poverty reduction, agriculture, infrastructure, human resource development, and regional integration.
He also expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s valuable support during Timor-Leste’s past struggle for independence as well as its ongoing national construction efforts, reaffirming his commitment to further deepening bilateral ties.
Welcoming the establishment of Vietnam’s resident diplomatic mission in Dili, the Prime Minister described it as an important milestone reflecting the growing relationship between the two countries. He pledged to direct relevant agencies to expedite procedures for the construction of the Vietnamese Embassy headquarters.
Prime Minister Gusmão also expressed his wish to visit Vietnam again in the near future, while welcoming Vietnamese leaders to Timor-Leste, in a bid to further strengthen political trust and expand bilateral cooperation.
For his part, Chargé d’Affaires Pham Binh Dam affirmed Vietnam’s consistent support for Timor-Leste and its readiness to promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including agriculture, food security, human resource development, infrastructure, digital transformation, and regional integration, particularly in supporting Timor-Leste’s ASEAN accession process.
He underscored that the opening of Vietnam’s resident mission in Dili reflects the country’s strong commitment to enhancing the effectiveness and depth of bilateral cooperation.
