Swiss President Guy Parmelin begins official visit to Vietnam
VOV.VN - Swiss President Guy Parmelin and his spouse, Caroline Parmelin, arrived in Hanoi on October 17, beginning a two-day official visit at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam and his spouse.
The visit comes at a significant time for bilateral relations, following the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in January 2025 and amid preparations for a new phase of economic cooperation.
Over the past 55 years, Vietnam and Switzerland have maintained friendly relations and expanded cooperation across a range of fields. Switzerland is an important European trade and investment partner for Vietnam, with bilateral trade exceeding US$1 billion in 2025.
The two countries are also preparing for the signing of a free trade agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which comprises Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The agreement is expected to improve market access, facilitate investment and create fresh opportunities for businesses on both sides.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Chau Mai Anh has said that President Parmelin’s visit could help turn existing cooperation potential into concrete outcomes. She highlighted the importance of expanding economic ties, fostering new business partnerships and strengthening cooperation in science, technology and innovation.
Swiss Ambassador to Vietnam Thomas Gass has also described the visit as an important milestone, providing an opportunity to reflect on the two countries’ shared progress and further advance bilateral cooperation.
With the Comprehensive Partnership providing a framework for closer engagement, the visit is to help deepen political ties, strengthen economic cooperation and broaden collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
