Samsung told to become a technology hub beyond manufacturing
VOV.VN - Vietnam wants Samsung to move beyond its role as a major manufacturing base and expand into technology, research and development and innovation in Vietnam.
Prime Minister Le Minh Hung made the proposal during his reception for Samsung Electronics President and CEO Roh Tae-moon in Hanoi on August 27, where they discussed the group’s investment and development plans in Vietnam.
The PM affirmed that Samsung Vietnam has become an important part of the country’s manufacturing and export network since the company began producing mobile phones in Vietnam in April 2009.
He said Vietnam is entering a new development phase focused on raising productivity and shifting the economic structure toward science and technology, innovation and digital transformation.
He called on Samsung to increase technology and innovation content in its activities in Vietnam and expand investment in research and development, while strengthening cooperation in high-tech areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centers and 5G/6G.
This approach is consistent with Vietnam’s changing priorities for attracting foreign investment, which place greater emphasis not only on capital, factories and export turnover but also on technology, investment quality, human resources and spillover effects for the domestic economy.
For his part, Roh said Samsung’s investment activities in Vietnam continued to grow steadily, with the group’s accumulated investment reaching US$24 billion by the end of 2025.
By the end of June 2026, Samsung’s phone manufacturing plants in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen had recorded US$500 billion in cumulative export turnover. The company also expects double-digit growth this year, supported by strong demand for new products.
He told his host that Samsung does not view Vietnam simply as a manufacturing base, but as an important strategic partner for high-tech research and development.
The group plans to continue expanding its R&D activities in Vietnam while strengthening training for high-quality technology talent.
Another priority is increasing the participation of Vietnamese companies in Samsung’s global supply chain. Together with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Samsung is implementing programmes to help domestic suppliers improve their capabilities and gradually meet the requirements of international supply chains.
Samsung’s development in Vietnam and Vietnam’s development are closely connected, and that the group will continue working with Vietnam as a trusted partner, Roh assured his host.
