Vietnam and the Republic of Korea established diplomatic relations in 1992. Over the past more than three decades, the bilateral relationship has evolved into a model of highly effective, substantive, and special cooperation.
The two countries have become leading partners across a wide range of fields, including politics, security–defence, economy, trade, investment, tourism, labour, and people-to-people exchanges.
The bilateral relationship has reached its highest level with the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022, underpinned by deep political trust and practical cooperation that brings tangible benefits to the people and businesses of both countries.
In political and diplomatic relations, Vietnam and the RoK have maintained regular high-level visits and exchanges while effectively implementing cooperation mechanisms, particularly in politics, defence, and security.
Economic, trade, and investment cooperation continues to serve as a major pillar. The RoK is currently Vietnam’s largest foreign investor and its third-largest trading partner, while Vietnam is the RoK’s top priority ODA recipient.
Cooperation in culture, education, labour, tourism, and other fields has also achieved significant progress, expanding continuously in both scale and quality.
In science, technology, and innovation, an emerging pillar in bilateral ties, the two countries have recorded encouraging outcomes, including the National Innovation Centre development project, the Vietnam–Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) in Hoa Lac, and the Can Tho Technology Incubator.
Labour and people-to-people cooperation has flourished, meeting the needs of both sides. More than 350,000 Vietnamese citizens are living in the RoK and over 200,000 Koreans reside in Vietnam, including around 100,000 multicultural families. In addition, approximately than 100 localities from both countries have established friendly exchange partnerships.
Vietnam and the RoK have also strengthened strategic coordination at regional and international forums, contributing to peace, stability, and shared development in the region and the wider world.
