President Luong Cuong's State visit to Egypt marks new chapter in bilateral relations
VOV.VN - A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by President Luong Cuong and his spouse left Hanoi on August 3 for Cairo, beginning a state visit to Egypt at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and his spouse.
This visit holds strategic significance, aiming to promote the comprehensive and sustainable development of Vietnam–Egypt relations as both countries enter a new era of growth. It marks an important milestone in foreign affairs, reflecting the strong political will of both countries to enhance their bilateral ties, deepen mutual trust, and open up a new phase of cooperation, especially in economy and trade.
Vietnam and Egypt established diplomatic relations on September 1, 1963, making Egypt one of the first African and Arab nations to formalize ties with Vietnam. Over more than 60 years, the bilateral relationship has been steadily strengthened and expanded across multiple fields.
In addition to the solid political foundation, the two countries have maintained close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. Building on this, economic, trade, and investment cooperation has achieved notable progress in recent years.

Egypt is currently Vietnam’s top trading partner in North Africa, with two-way trade reaching over US$541 million in 2024. It has 22 projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of nearly US$2.9 million. Notably, in 2013 Egypt became the first North African country to officially recognise Vietnam as a market economy.
Cultural and educational cooperation has also flourished, helping to bring the peoples of both nations closer together. With populations exceeding 100 million each and strategically important geographic positions, both countries are well-positioned to support each other in accessing larger markets across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
President Luong Cuong’s visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries, including President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to Vietnam in 2017, President Tran Dai Quang’s visit to Egypt in 2018, and Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang’s official visit to Egypt in July 2023.
This visit also provides an opportunity to unlock further cooperation potential, strengthen business linkages, promote trade and investment, and make full use of bilateral mechanisms such as the Vietnam – Egypt Intergovernmental Committee, which has been maintained regularly since its first session in 1997.
Importantly, this trip builds on the precious legacy of President Ho Chi Minh and President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who laid the foundation for the Vietnam–Egypt friendship. It reaffirms the long-term strategic vision of fostering strong ties with friendly countries in the Arab world.
