PM welcomes Samsung’s ambitious goal in Vietnam

VOV.VN - A senior leader of Samsung Electronics has unveiled the group’s plan to turn Vietnam into not only a global manufacturing base but a centre of research and development centres globally, and the idea has been welcomed by the Vietnamese Prime Minister.

Park Hark-kyu, president and chief financial officer at Samsung Electronics, revealed the group’s plan at a reception hosted by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on April 13.

Park said inaugurated in December 2022 the research and development centre of Samsung in Hanoi is bringing into full play its role in developing high-qualify human resources, increasing the localization rate and promoting cooperation with the Vietnam National Innovation Centre.

More than 2,000 engineers have been working at the R&D centre in Hanoi, while the number of primary and secondary Vietnamese suppliers in Samsung’s global supply chain has increased tenfold, from 25 in 2014 to 257 by the end of 2022, he said.

Park thanked the government and localities of Vietnam for support, highly appreciated Vietnam’s investment and business environment, and affirmed the group’s commitment to accompanying and making positive contributions to Vietnam’s socio-economic development.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, for his part, assured his guest that the Government of Vietnam is committed to promptly removing difficulties and obstacles, introducing viable solutions, and creating favourable conditions for foreign investors, including Samsung, to operate successfully in the country.

He congratulated Samsung on its success last year and said the decision to upgrade the Vietnam – RoK relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in December 5, 2022 would open up new cooperation opportunities between the two countries’ business communities.

He expressed hope Samsung would continue to set an exemplary role model in promoting economic cooperation between the two countries by developing new strategic projects and expanding investment activities towards new higher goals in 2023 and beyond.

Both host and guest also exchanged views on issues such as the global minimum tax and economic projections in a number of countries in the world.

Chinh said the Vietnamese government has set up a special working group to study, analyze and fully assess the impact of the application of the global minimum tax. The working group will continue to garner opinions of the parties, consult experiences of other countries and submit recommendations to competent authorities for consideration and decision.
