PM urges MUFG to support Vietnam’s Int’l Financial Centre development

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on Japan’s largest financial group MUFG to support Vietnam in developing an international financial centre, during his reception for Hironori Kamezawa, President and CEO of the group in Hanoi on August 7.

He praised Japan’s global and regional role and stressed the importance of Vietnam learning from Japan, especially in science, technology, and innovation, including the Japanese spirit of discipline and dedication.

He appreciated the strategic cooperation between VietinBank and MUFG, and affirmed that the Government of Vietnam would continue to create favourable conditions for Japanese banks to invest in the country, calling this a smart and timely investment.

The Prime Minister noted that Vietnam is in need of banking system restructuring, making such partnerships particularly vital. He expressed hope that MUFG would invest in Vietnam’s international financial centre and explore new and emerging sectors such as science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation.

He also encouraged MUFG to help organise investment promotion conferences, share policy implementation feedback, and offer development expertise.

Kamezawa, for his part, shared that the group has been a strategic partner of VietinBank for 12 years, during which time it has shared valuable management expertise. The two sides have jointly launched several initiatives to support Vietnam’s development.

The CEO said MUFG is currently exploring models for developing an international financial centre in Vietnam, and with extensive experience in this field, the group stands ready to assist.

He added that MUFG is working with the State Bank of Vietnam to organise expert seminars and is expanding investments in the financial sector. According to the CEO, Vietnam is becoming an increasingly important partner for Japanese enterprises, and MUFG considers the country one of the most attractive investment destinations.

MUFG aims to deepen cooperation with VietinBank, thereby fostering stronger Vietnam–Japan economic ties, he said.

Kamezawa emphasised that Japan has developed largely through science, technology, and innovation. He expressed MUFG’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with both Vietnam and VietinBank, with a focus on digital and green transitions.

He also affirmed MUFG’s intention to host development-focused conferences in Vietnam to mobilise financial resources and share experience with the country.
