PM Pham Minh Chinh leaves Hanoi for 43rd ASEAN Summit in Indonesia

VOV.VN - A high-ranking delegation of Vietnam led by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh left Hanoi on September 4 for Jakarta, Indonesia, where they will attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related meetings from September 5-7 at the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

This is the region’s largest annual summit event that brings together leaders of ASEAN countries and partners, including China, the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand, Canada, the United Nations and many representatives of other regional and international organizations.

The meetings take place amidst rapid and complex changes in the region and the wider world this year, presenting both opportunities and challenges to ASEAN. Although the global economy is showing signs of recovery from its fallout, it contains uncertainties, due to financial risks and geographical instability.

Facing challenges both internally and externally, ASEAN has basically maintained its solidarity, moving towards the grouping’s development strategy until 2045, as well as affirming its central role in the region.

Themed ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth’, Indonesia, in its capacity as ASEAN Chair this year, has put forward numerous initiatives to promote the region’s sustainable economic growth and capacity building as well as ASEAN’s operational efficiency, thus creating a driving force for cooperation and consolidating the grouping’s role as a leading force in the process of dialogue and cooperation for peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.

Relations between ASEAN and its partners continue to expand for win-win cooperation. Partners support ASEAN’s central role, and wish for practical and long-term cooperation with ASEAN, through many practical initiatives and expanding cooperation in various potential fields.

The 43rd ASEAN Summit and related meetings are of paramount importance, providing an opportunity for the leaders to examine ASEAN’s strategic issues, its development, and measures to create motivation for regional cooperation in the coming time. The leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Along with the 43rd ASEAN Summit, there will be other summits between ASEAN plus each of its partners (China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States, India, Australia, Russia, the United Nations and Canada; between ASEAN plus China, Japan and the Republic of Korea); and the East Asia Summit.

On this occasion, Indonesia is also playing host to the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit on September 3-4 and the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) on September 5-6, with the participation of leaders of ASEAN countries and partners, representatives of international organizations, businesses and scholars.

These meetings will be centred on reviewing the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and ASEAN blueprints on the three pillars: politics-security community, economic community and socio-cultural community.

The leaders will lay out orientations for ASEAN’s development strategy in the next 20 years, towards a united, self-reliant, creative, dynamic and people-centered ASEAN Community.

The leaders will also discuss directions and measures to strengthen and deepen relations between ASEAN and its partners, along with exchanging views on regional and global situations.

It is expected that these meetings will approve approximately 50 documents, including the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, the Declaration of ASEAN Concord IV, the Declaration of ASEAN as the Epicentrum of Growth, together with other documents on cooperation within ASEAN and between ASEAN and its partners.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is anticipated to deliver speeches, sharing Vietnam’s perspectives and proposing directions in many important areas of cooperation, in order to consolidate the process of building a united and strong ASEAN Community. He will attend and deliver an important speech at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit themed ‘ASEAN Centrality: Innovating Towards Greater Inclusivity’.

The Prime Minister will meet with leaders of a number of participating countries and international organizations to promote bilateral cooperation, and exchange views on issues of concern at the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum.
