PM hosts New Zealand Foreign Minister in Hanoi

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on June 5 received New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters who arrived in Hanoi the same day for the second Vietnam – New Zealand Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Chinh welcomed Peters’ visit which he said would help concretize high-level agreements, especially the results recorded during his official visit to New Zealand in March 2024.

He expressed his satisfaction at the strong development of bilateral relations, and at the same time appreciated the two Foreign Ministries maintaining the Foreign Ministers’ meeting mechanism as agreed in the Vietnam – New Zealand Strategic Partnership Action Plan for 2021-2024.

He requested that the two Foreign Ministries closely coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to implement specific cooperation projects and activities to further deepen cooperation in all fields, creating a solid foundation for raising bilateral relations to new heights.

Peters for his part affirmed that New Zealand attaches great importance to Vietnam’s role in the region as well as the Vietnam-New Zealand Strategic Partnership. He expressed hope that the two sides will soon build a new relationship framework based on the existing good relationship.

He also affirmed that the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs will cooperate closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam in arranging visits and contacts between senior leaders of the two countries in the coming time, as well as organizing activities to celebrate 50 years of their diplomatic relations in 2025.

The two sides agreed to cooperate closely and actively support each other at multilateral forums.

Peters emphasized that New Zealand values ​​​​the central role of ASEAN and its strategic partnership with ASEAN, expressing the desire to soon bring this relationship to new heights.

Discussing the East Sea issue, both sides agreed to support ASEAN’s common stance by resolving disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to ensuring safety, security, freedom of navigation and aviation in the regional waters.

Also at the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent his regards to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and conveyed an invitation to his New Zealand counterpart to visit Vietnam soon.
