PM holds high-level bilateral talks on G20 Summit sidelines in South Africa
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders and international organisations during the G20 Summit in South Africa.
Meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Prime Minister Chinh praised progress in bilateral ties and called for deeper cooperation in trade, investment, science, and technology, leveraging both countries’ Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) membership. He proposed that Canada open its market to Vietnamese goods, strengthen investment, and connect supply chains in a sustainable and mutually beneficial manner.
Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to Vietnam as a key Indo-Pacific partner. He agreed with the proposals and suggested close coordination to promote the agreed cooperation initiatives, aiming to develop the Vietnam–Canada Comprehensive Partnership in a more substantive way and toward new heights.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister respectfully invited the Canadian Prime Minister to visit Vietnam soon, and the Canadian leader gladly accepted.
During his meeting with Angolan President Joao Lourenço, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted Vietnam’s role as an African Union observer and pledged to strengthen trade and agricultural cooperation. He affirmed that Vietnam always values its traditional and friendly relations and wishes to strengthen cooperation with African countries, including Angola, particularly in the fields of agriculture and trade.
He suggested that both countries promote the export of key products to each other amid today’s intense trade competition. With its role as an Observer of the African Union (AU) since December 2023, Vietnam stands ready to continue accompanying the AU to make further practical contributions to the African Union’s Agenda 2063, while also hoping that Angola will support the promotion of FTA negotiations between Vietnam and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
President Lourenço reaffirmed Angola’s consistent support for Vietnam in strengthening relations with the African Union and African countries, including Angola. He welcomed and committed to facilitating Vietnamese businesses interested in investing in Angola, particularly in agriculture, telecommunications, and energy, and expressed hope that Vietnam would soon send an inter-agency delegation and business representatives to Angola to promote specific cooperation projects based on the directions and commitments of the two countries’ top leaders.
On this occasion, the Prime Minister of Vietnam conveyed the invitation from General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong to the President of Angola to visit Vietnam soon. The Angolan President gladly accepted.
Meeting with Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said Vietnam wishes to promote friendly and cooperative relations with Saudi Arabia, aiming for increasingly comprehensive and substantive development.
He proposed that both sides expand markets, facilitate bilateral trade, and expedite the launch of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries, as well as a Vietnam–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) FTA.
He also encouraged Saudi Arabia to increase investment in Vietnam’s potential projects in strategic infrastructure, logistics, renewable energy, digital transformation, and science and technology; support Vietnam in building its international financial centre in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang; and expand cooperation in trade, investment, defense, food security, and the Halal industry.
Highly agreeing with the Prime Minister’s proposals, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud affirmed that Saudi Arabia always values the development of a comprehensive cooperative relationship with Vietnam, one of the most dynamic economies in Southeast Asia. He expressed support for the early negotiation and signing of a Vietnam–GCC FTA, and suggested that Vietnam soon send a business delegation to Saudi Arabia to discuss and promote investment cooperation projects.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Zimbabwean Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, reviewing recent agreements, enhancing trade links, and exploring cooperation in agriculture, mining, infrastructure, and technology.
Finally, the Prime Minister met WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, thanking the agency for pandemic support and requesting continued assistance to prevent post-flood disease outbreaks.
