PM expects breakthroughs in agricultural cooperation with New Zealand

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expected breakthroughs to be made in agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and New Zealand during his call at the Plant and Food Research Centre (PFR) in Auckland on March 10.

Talking to the PFR leadership, Chinh highly appreciated the centre implementing cooperation projects with Vietnam and its localities that are bringing about initial encouraging results.

PFR is undertaking a US$3.3 million project to grow passion fruit in Son La and Gia Lai provinces from 2023 to 2027.

It is also implementing a project to create three varieties of dragon fruit to resist the white and brown spot disease. These varieties are also being piloted in a number of areas in New Zealand.

PFR is cooperating with Binh Dinh province to produce safe vegetables according to GAP procedures, and with Dak Nong province to develop the avocado export supply chain.

The PM said during this visit, leaders of the two countries would discuss measures to further promote bilateral cooperation, in fields such as trade, investment, labour, education - training, and agriculture.

The two sides he said have advantages that can complement each other. New Zealand, according to the PM, has a large land but few people, while Vietnam has a small area with more people. In addition, both countries have rich cultures, cuisines and identities.

All this provides an important foundations for organizations and businesses of the two countries to promote investment cooperation, in which research, agricultural production and food processing are important areas, he stressed.

The PM hoped that the two sides would continue to promote the recorded gains, and accelerate cooperation in areas with great potential, especially creating breakthroughs in agricultural cooperation.
