PM encourages AstraZeneca to transfer technology to Vietnam

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged AstraZeneca to enhance cooperation with Vietnam, including in technology transfer, during his reception for Nitin Kapoor, Vice President BioPharmaceuticals International and Frontier Markets, AstraZeneca, and Chairman of AstraZeneca Vietnam, in Hanoi on March 5.

Chinh thanked AstraZeneca and Kapoor personally for their practical and effective contributions to Vietnam, particularly during the fight against COVID-19, noting AstraZeneca completed its commitment to supplying 30 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Vietnam ahead of schedule.

The firm has also invested nearly US$100 million in the pharmaceutical sector in Vietnam, with an additional US$50 million invested in forest and landscape restoration projects. It has implemented numerous cooperation programmes with the Ministry of Health, and donated VND1.2 billion to assist people affected by Typhoon Yagi last year.

AstraZeneca and Kapoor himself have also been actively involved in the Vietnam Business Forum, by promptly reflecting foreign business concerns and making recommendations to the Vietnamese Government.

To achieve sustainable development goals, the Government of Vietnam values and wants to further strengthen cooperation with foreign investors, including AstraZeneca, said the PM.

He requested that AstraZeneca continue to invest, transfer technology, support, and advise on the development of the vaccine, pharmaceutical, and public healthcare sectors in Vietnam, while contributing to forest development and supporting social welfare, particularly for disadvantaged groups.

The PM also noted that the Government of Vietnam is continuing to improve the business investment environment, especially administrative reforms, to speed up processes and reduce costs for businesses.

Kapoor for his part acknowledged Vietnam’s resilience and determination in development, particularly the goal of securing 8% GDP growth this year.

He agreed with the Prime Minister’s proposals and shared some recommendations on Vietnam’s business environment. He affirmed that AstraZeneca would continue to accompany Vietnam in achieving the set goals, supporting its sustainable development, promoting GDP growth, reducing net emissions to zero through activities like forest planting, biomass energy development, and the establishment of the carbon credit market, alongside healthcare programmes.

AstraZeneca is a multinational biotechnology and pharmaceutical company based in the UK and Sweden. The company currently operates in over 100 countries and is among the largest pharmaceutical companies globally. AstraZeneca Vietnam has been operating since 1994 and leads in clinical trials in the country.
