PM Chinh’s working trip to US, Brazil opens up new cooperation opportunities

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has just concluded his working trip to the United States and Brazil, opening up plenty of opportunity for strengthening cooperation between Vietnam and the United States, Brazil and other partners.

During his stay in the US from September 17-22, Chinh attended a number of meetings within the framework of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, including a high-level general debate, a climate ambition summit, and a high-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

In his speeches at these meetings, he dwelled on major challenges the world is facing, and put forwards solutions to these challenges. He particularly stressed the need for countries to show sincerity, strengthen solidarity, increase trust and promote cooperation bilaterally and multilaterally to address the global challenges. He also reminded them to put people at the centre of decision making towards accomplishing sustainable development goals.

The Prime Minister had nearly 20 bilateral meetings with leaders of countries and international organizations, such as the UN Secretary General, President of the UN General Assembly, President of Cuba, Prime Minister of Thailand, President of Romania, President of Slovenia, President of Finland, among others.

The partners all expressed their appreciation for Vietnam’s position, role and positive voice globally. They agreed to increase delegation visits and cooperation in politics - diplomacy, economy - trade, science - technology, labour, tourism, education - training, and people-to-people exchanges with Vietnam, as well as strengthening mutual support at regional and international forums.

They voiced their support of peacefully resolving disputes in the East Sea on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), ensuring security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the waters.

On this occasion, Vietnam also established diplomatic relations with Tonga, bringing the total number of countries having diplomatic relations with Vietnam to 193 countries.

PM Pham Minh Chinh had many bilateral meetings US politicians and leading business leaders in an effort to concretize and implement agreements and commitments reached between senior leaders of the two countries. US President Joe Biden made a State visit to Vietnam on September 10-11 during which both sides announced the lifting of their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Chinh visited and delivered speeches at Georgetown University and University of San Francisco, briefing scholars and students on Vietnam’s chosen socialist path and its foreign policy. He reiterated the two countries’ commitment to breaking with the past and looking to the future, for peace, cooperation and sustainable development, noting Vietnam and the US have set an exemplary role model in healing the wound of the past war.

Notably, he called at semiconductor chip manufacturers and tech giants such as NVIDIA, Synopsys, and Facebook, and had meetings with leaders of many leading firms like Apple, Google, and Boeing, along with ringing the bell opening new trading sessions at New York and Nasdaq stock exchanges.

According to Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung who accompanied the PM during the trip, Vietnam is likely to receive a new wave of investment from US businesses into the fields that it needs, such as innovation, semiconductor chip manufacturing, renewable energy, the environment, health, and education – training.

After the US, Chinh flew to Brasilia on an official visit to Brazil, the fifth of its kind by generations of Vietnamese leaders following the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1989.

During his Sept. 23-26 stay, the Vietnamese Government leader held talks with Brazilian President Lula da Silver and they both then witnessed the signing of a number of cooperation agreements between the two countries.

Chinh also met with leaders of the National Congress of Brazil, some Brazilian political parties and friendship organizations, and delivered a speech at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He chaired discussions with Brazilian businesses and visited some leading Brazilian firms, including Embraer S.A., a Brazilian multinational aerospace corporation.

The visit offered both Vietnam and Brazil opportunities to ramp up their cooperation, especially in economy, trade and investment, as well as in new areas of cooperation such as climate change response, new energy development, digital transformation, food security, and energy security.

Both sides hoped Brazil serves as the gateway for Vietnam to enter Latin American markets, while Vietnam is the gateway for Brazil to enter ASEAN and Asian countries. They both also expected to bridge trade cooperation between the South Common Market (MERCOSUR) and ASEAN.

Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son said the two countries issued a Joint Communiqué, demonstrating the stature of their cooperative relationship, and at the same time charting a new course for increasingly substantive, effective cooperation towards a new and appropriate relationship framework in the coming time.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s working trip has conveyed the great message of the Party, State and Government of Vietnam to the US, Brazil and international friends about Vietnam engaging more actively, proactively and effectively in international processes, and making important contributions to the relations between Vietnam and the UN, between Vietnam and the US, and between Vietnam and Brazil.
