Lithuania President Gitanas Nauseda begins official visit to Vietnam today

VOV.VN - President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda and his spouse are scheduled to begin their two-day official visit to Vietnam on June 11 at the invitation of President Luong Cuong.

This is the first official visit to Vietnam by a Lithuanian head of state following the establishment of their diplomatic relations in 1992. Nauseda’s visit therefore represents a significant milestone and aims to open a new chapter in Vietnam - Lithuania relations.

President Gitanas Nausėda, 61, has served as Lithuania’s head of state since 2019. Vietnam is the second stop on his ongoing tour of Asia, following his visit to Japan.

Ha Hoang Hai, Vietnamese Ambassador to Poland and concurrently accredited to Lithuania, says Nauseda’s visit is expected to strengthen political trust and promote strategic connectivity between the two countries, especially within the framework of ASEAN - EU cooperation. According to the ambassador, Vietnam and Lithuania share many common visions in sustainable development, international integration, and digital transformation, as well as in responding to global challenges such as climate change, energy security, and supply chain disruptions.

The two countries have signed several key documents, including those on investment promotion, economic-trade cooperation, visa exemption for diplomatic passport holders, migration management and diplomatic cooperation.

At multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, ASEM, and ASEAN - EU, the two sides maintain active collaboration. Lithuania has consistently supported key agreements between Vietnam and the EU, such as the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU - Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).

Two-way trade between Vietnam and Lithuania reached nearly US$207 million in 2024, and US$94.7 million in the first five months of 2025, up 94.4% year on year. Currently, Lithuania has three active direct investment projects in Vietnam with a total capital of around US$260,000, mainly in media, health care, and science and technology.

Meanwhile, approximately 100 Vietnamese nationals are living and working in Lithuania, mostly engaged in trade activities in shopping centres in the capital Vilnius.

During his stay in Vietnam, Nauseda will hold high-level talks and meetings with leaders of the Vietnamese Party and State. In addition, both sides will organise business - investment promotion forums, and community engagement activities. They will sign a number of important cooperation documents in potential fields such as trade and investment, education and training, high-tech agriculture, health care, clean energy, and digital transformation.
