IPU lauds Vietnam’s active, responsible role in parliamentary cooperation
VOV.VN - Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Martin Chungong praised the increasingly active and responsible role of the National Assembly of Vietnam in multilateral parliamentary mechanisms, while meeting with National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man in Istanbul, Türkiye, on April 17.
Meeting with Man on the sidelines of the IPU-152 Assembly there, Chungong noted that Vietnam has consistently attached great importance to and actively participated in IPU activities, as reflected in its substantive contributions and initiatives at international parliamentary forums, as well as its high-level engagement at IPU Assemblies.
These contributions are particularly significant in the context of growing global uncertainties, where stronger multilateral institutions are essential for promoting peace, stability and sustainable development, he said.
The IPU Secretary General also highly valued Vietnam’s independent, self-reliant and diversified foreign policy of multilateralisation, stressing that the National Assembly of Vietnam has established itself as a proactive, responsible and constructive member of the global parliamentary community.
He welcomed Vietnam’s successful organisation of the elections for the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term, which recorded a high voter turnout and laid an important political and social foundation for the country’s next development phase.
Chairman Man, for his part, shared assessments on the international and regional situation raised by the IPU Secretary General, noting the world is witnessing rapid and complex developments, marked by increasing conflicts, growing non-traditional security challenges, and more severe natural disasters and climate change impacts.
In this context, Vietnam remains steadfast in its support for multilateralism and the irreplaceable role of multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and the IPU, in promoting peace, stability and sustainable development, he said.
Regarding orientations to further strengthen cooperation between the National Assembly of Vietnam and the IPU in the coming period, Man stressed the need to enhance parliamentary cooperation in areas such as science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, green transition and sustainable development. He called on the IPU to continue supporting Vietnam in improving its legislative and oversight capacity, and to facilitate Vietnam’s deeper engagement in IPU mechanisms and specialised forums, as well as its hosting of international and regional IPU events in the future.
Man expressed appreciation for the IPU Secretary General’s support and acknowledged his contributions to strengthening global parliamentary cooperation during his tenure.
