Head of US House Ways and Means Committee visits Vietnam

VOV.VN - Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Hai received Jason Smith, chair of the Committee on Ways and Means of the US House of Representatives in Hanoi on August 4.

Hai affirmed that Vietnam always considers the US one of its top important partners, adding that the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Partnership is developing substantively towards new heights.

He singled out economic, financial, trade and investment cooperation as major pillar in bilateral relations, with two-way trade turnover hitting a record high of US$123 billion last year.

Hai suggested that the two countries should establish and implement new and more effective bilateral and multilateral economic-trade-investment mechanisms to maintain and promote trade and investment quickly and sustainably.

At the same time, he also suggested that the US take measures to support Vietnam in improving its position in the global supply chain; cooperate with Vietnam in forming a number of strategic supply chains that Vietnam has potential and needs while the US has strengths, such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy.

According to the senior Vietnamese legislator, Vietnam and the US should strengthen dialogue on tariff and trade policies. He asked the US to abolish technical barriers and trade remedies against Vietnamese products, especially agricultural, forestry and fishery products; share experiences and support Vietnam in building and perfecting the legal framework for the application of the global minimum tax.

Smith for his part noted that the two countries should continue to promote cooperative in the fields of economy and trade. He voiced the US’ desire to support Vietnam in issues related to global supply chains in the coming time.

He emphasized similarities shared by the two countries, especially in agriculture, and said the US would consider reducing tariffs on Vietnamese agricultural products.
