HCM City ceremony marks 70 years of Vietnam-Indonesia relations

VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee held a ceremony on December 19 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Indonesia (December 30, 1955 – 2025).

The event was attended by city leaders, representatives of the Indonesian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, diplomatic missions, friendship organisations, the business community, and other guests from both countries.

Speaking at the function, Nguyen Cong Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, emphasised that Indonesia was the first Southeast Asian country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam, on the solid political foundation laid by President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno.

Over the past 70 years, he said, the friendship and cooperation between the two countries have been continuously strengthened, making positive contributions to peace, stability, and development in the region.

Vinh noted that the upgrade of Vietnam–Indonesia relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025 marked an important historical milestone, making Vietnam Indonesia’s first comprehensive strategic partner in ASEAN.

This provides a strong foundation for expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, with the two sides aiming to achieve bilateral trade turnover of US$18 billion before 2028, while enhancing coordination at regional and international forums, he stated.

Indonesia is currently one of Ho Chi Minh City’s important partners, with 113 active investment projects totaling more than US$167 million, spanning trade, investment, culture, and tourism. He highly appreciated the role of the Indonesian Consulate General and the Indonesian community in Ho Chi Minh City, expressing confidence that bilateral cooperation would continue to grow strongly and make practical contributions to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

At the ceremony, Indonesian Consul General Carolina Tinangon reviewed the 70-year journey of Vietnam–Indonesia relations, affirming Ho Chi Minh City’s particularly important role in promoting bilateral cooperation as a major economic and commercial hub and an attractive destination for Indonesian businesses.

She praised the effectiveness of direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta, as well as Ho Chi Minh City and Bali, in promoting people-to-people exchanges and tourism. She expressed hope that the two sides would expand cooperation in the digital economy, green economy, renewable energy, food security, and the development of the Halal industry as new drivers for bilateral trade and investment.
