Foreign Minister attends AMM 56 and related meetings in Indonesia

VOV.VN -Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Bui Thanh Son is scheduled to attend a number of meetings within the framework of the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM 56) and related meetings in Indonesia between July 11 and 14.

He is set to attend a meeting of the Committee of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), an interface between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), and the opening ceremony of AMM 56 on July 11.

He will attend the AMM Retreat and witness the signing of documents on the accession of Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Panama to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) on July 12.

On July 13, Son will co-chair the ASEAN –Republic of Korea Foreign Ministers Meeting, and attend meetings between foreign ministers of ASEAN and partners (India, New Zealand, Russia, Australia, China, Japan, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada), along with the 24th ASEAN +3 Foreign Ministers Meeting.

On the following day, he will attend the 13th East Asia summit (EAS), the ASEAN – US Foreign Ministers Meeting, and the 30th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).

The meetings are to review recent developments and outline orientations for closer cooperation within ASEAN and between ASEAN and its partners. The ministers will also examine perorations for the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related meetings to be held in September 2023.

The meetings take place at a time when regional and global situations continue to witness new and complicated developments. The global economy is showing gradual signs of recovery, while countries are actively introducing trade, investment and production restructuring policies towards the digital economy, green economy and circular economy, strongly affecting the shift in financial, investment and production chains.

In addition, competition is occurring more intensely among major powers, while regional ‘hot spots’ such as the Russia-Ukraine military conflict, the East Sea, the Korean peninsula, the Taiwanese Strait and Myanmar remain complicated, negatively impacting peace, security, stability and development in the region.

In this context, ASEAN will continue to uphold the spirit of solidarity, consolidate its central role in addressing regional and global issues, successfully build the community, and chart its development course moving forward.

The success of AMM 56 and related meetings will help further concritise ASEAN leaders’ perceptions at the 42nd ASEAN Summit, and at the same time prepare for the bloc’s activities in the second half of the year.
