Deputy PM to attend Mekong–Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in China
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son will attend the 10th Mekong–Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, to be held in Anning city, Yunnan province, China, on August 14–15, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The invitation has been extended by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Foreign Ministry said in a press communique on August 13.
The meeting, themed “Golden Decade: Staying Committed to Building a Better Community Through Solidarity,” underscores the warm and close-knit cooperation among MLC member countries. The mechanism is marking its 10th anniversary and is prepared to enter its second decade next year.
Delegates will review the achievements attained within the MLC framework and explore measures to further strengthen future cooperation, ensuring it becomes more effective and delivers greater benefits to the peoples of the Mekong subregion and China.
The MLC brings together six countries along the Mekong–Lancang River, namely China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The mechanism aims to promote comprehensive cooperation in the subregion; strengthen mutual trust; maintain peace and stability; foster sustainable development; reduce poverty; narrow development gaps; and enhance regional and global economic integration as well as people-to-people exchanges.
The cooperation principles are based on consensus, equality, coordination, mutual benefit, and respect for the UN Charter and international law. Its cooperation is structured around three key pillars—political and security; economic and sustainable development; and social, cultural, and people-to-people exchange. Priority areas cover water resource management, connectivity enhancement, production capacity development, cross-border economic cooperation, agriculture, and poverty reduction.
The MLC Special Fund was established in 2017 to support small and medium-sized projects of member countries. To date, China has contributed US$300 million, funding nearly 1,000 projects.
Vietnam has actively participated in the MLC since its inception, contributing numerous cooperation initiatives, particularly in elevating water resource cooperation to a priority area.
So far, 28 projects proposed by Vietnamese ministries, sectors, and localities have been approved by the MLC Special Fund. Vietnamese agencies have also actively engaged in the activities of various Working Groups, contributing to the development of documents, plans, and cooperation orientations.
