Deputy PM pushes for stronger Vietnam-China higher education cooperation
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Le Tien Chau has called for broader cooperation between Vietnamese universities and Tsinghua University of China, particularly in training personnel for strategic technology sectors, advancing scientific research and promoting innovation.
Receiving Professor Li Luming, President of Tsinghua University, in Hanoi on November 3, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the potential for the two sides to build on their longstanding academic partnership.
He hailed cooperation between Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), and Tsinghua University over nearly two decades, with a comprehensive cooperation agreement signed in 2024.
The two institutions are expected to expand collaboration in areas where Vietnam is seeking to strengthen its scientific and technological capabilities, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, new energy, biotechnology and biomedicine.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his hope that Tsinghua would share its experience in university governance, high-quality human resource development, scientific research and innovation, including support for start-ups and the development of technology ecosystems.
He also proposed cooperation in training Vietnamese officials, doctoral candidates and experts in strategic technology fields, alongside the establishment of joint research teams and laboratories, and greater collaboration in international scientific publications.
Particular attention is given to strengthening links between universities, research institutes and businesses through commissioned research projects, start-up incubation, technology transfer and commercialisation.
The Deputy Prime Minister hoped that stronger cooperation between Vietnamese universities and Tsinghua would contribute to the development of science and technology in Vietnam and further strengthen relations between the two countries.
Professor Li, for his part, spoke highly of Vietnam’s attention to higher education development and its role in hosting the conference. He also shared Tsinghua’s perspectives on the challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence presents for education.
He hoped that cooperation between Tsinghua and Vietnamese universities would continue to expand, including through increased exchanges of students, lecturers and researchers. He also encouraged more Vietnamese students to study at Tsinghua and called for closer academic engagement between the university and its Vietnamese partners.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Global MOOC and Online Education Conference 2026 (GMC 2026), jointly hosted for the first time by VNU and Tsinghua University. The conference was initiated and coordinated by Tsinghua through the Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance (GMA), bringing together discussions on the transformation of education in the age of artificial intelligence.
A cooperation agreement was also signed between VNU University of Science and Tsinghua University's School of Environment, providing a further basis for academic and research collaboration.
