Top leader highlights priorities for higher education at UEH anniversary
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam has called on the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) to improve the quality of education and research, develop high-quality human resources and strengthen its contribution to national development.
Addressing a ceremony marking the university’s 50th anniversary in Ho Chi Minh City on October 28, the top leader outlined priorities for education and training, scientific research, talent development and university governance, in the context of Vietnam’s development requirements.
Improving education and developing talent
In his speech, General Secretary and President To Lam stressed the need to modernise training, improve the quality of teaching and assessment, and better equip students with knowledge and skills required in a changing environment.
He underscored the importance of developing independent thinking, creativity and a sense of responsibility, alongside patriotism, professional ethics and civic responsibility. Students should also strengthen their foreign-language and digital skills, critical thinking and capacity for lifelong learning.
He called for greater attention to identifying and nurturing talent, as well as improving the quality of human resources to meet the country’s development needs.
These priorities were discussed in the context of the Politburo’s Resolution No. 71 on education and training and Resolution No. 57 on science, technology, innovation and digital transformation.
Linking research with development needs
The top leader also emphasised the role of scientific research in supporting institutional reform and the transformation of Vietnam’s growth model.
According to him, research activities should contribute to improving labour productivity and national competitiveness, while addressing development requirements associated with digital and green transitions and population ageing.
He also called for stronger links between universities, businesses and local authorities, so that education and research are more closely connected with practical needs.
The emphasis on research and cooperation was among the key points of his address, alongside the need to strengthen academic capacity and improve the contribution of universities to the country’s development.
Strengthening university governance and academic capacity
To support these tasks, General Secretary and President To Lam highlighted the importance of developing academic staff, attracting talented people and providing support for younger lecturers.
He also called for improvements in university governance, stronger Party-building, transparency, the prevention of corruption, academic integrity, digitalisation and the efficient use of resources.
The remarks were delivered as UEH marked five decades since its establishment on October 27, 1976.
Speaking at the ceremony, UEH director Bui Quang Hung reviewed the university’s development and outlined its ambition to move from a traditional university model towards a “value co-creating university”. Its strategic goals include entering the top 150 universities in Asia by 2030 and the top 100 during the 2035–2045 period.
At the ceremony, General Secretary and President To Lam presented the First-Class Labour Order to UEH. Ho Chi Minh City also presented the university with a traditional flag.
