Cambodian official hails Vietnam as model of independence and growth

VOV.VN - Vietnam has become a shining example in the struggle for independence, freedom, and development, according to Sous Yara, spokesperson for the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and First Vice Chairman of the CPP’s External Relations Commission.

Yara, who is also Chairman of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Information of the Cambodian National Assembly, made the statement during an interview recently granted to Phnom Penh-based VOV correspondents on the occasion of Vietnam’s 80th’s National Day.

He noted that since its founding in February 1930, the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) has stood as the nation’s supreme force, charting the course to build a modern socialist country rooted in Marxism-Leninism and its own theoretical foundations. From its earliest days, the Party galvanised the people in the Xô Viết–Nghệ Tĩnh uprising and, during the critical years of 1941–1945, laid the groundwork for independence. The August 1945 Revolution shattered colonial rule, ended the feudal system, abolished slavery, and restored national independence.

Yet, the CPV, he said, did not rest on its laurels. It continued to lead the nation through decisive campaigns such as the 1950 Border Campaign, and especially the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign, culminating in the signing of the Geneva Accords, thereby reaffirming Vietnam’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

These victories reflected not only the Party’s role in uniting the spirit of the people but also its ability to define strategic direction and sustain unwavering determination toward national reunification, he said.

In the period between independence and reunification, Vietnam pursued a dual strategy of building socialism in the North and waging a liberation struggle in the South. This approach forged both military and economic strength, ultimately paving the way for the triumph of the 1975 Ho Chi Minh Campaign.

That victory was not only a source of immense pride for the Vietnamese people but also a turning point in the history of Indochina, marking the end of war in the region, he remarked, adding the Party’s leadership proved decisive in steering Vietnam through hardship, restoring the economy, and safeguarding sovereignty.

Later, he said, Vietnam’s bold decision to embrace market reforms and expand economic and trade relations opened a new chapter of growth. Living standards improved, society stabilised, and Vietnam emerged as a dynamic economic “dragon” in the region, creating a source of pride for its people and a symbol of its resilience.

Today, he noted, under the leadership of the CPV, especially Party General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam is firmly on track to achieve its national goals and elevate its position both regionally and globally. This journey stands as a testament to the Party’s enduring vision and leadership, he concluded.

According to the official, Vietnam and Cambodia share a traditional bond of friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation nurtured by generations of both peoples. This enduring partnership has withstood the trials of history, from the struggle for national liberation to the ongoing work of national construction.

Reaffirming this deep connection, he said, Cambodian leaders have often expressed pride in the close ties between the two countries. Over the past half-century, the Cambodian People’s Party, the Cambodian State, and above all the Cambodian people have stood united with Vietnam, fostering a spirit of good-neighborliness, traditional friendship, and long-term stability. Cambodia and Vietnam are not only indispensable neighbours but also lifelong friends. This solidarity forms the foundation for cooperation and mutual support at all levels, from people to people, state to state, and party to party.

High-ranking leaders of both parties meet regularly to strengthen cooperation in politics, defence, economy, and particularly in promoting cross-border trade. Yara recalled the phone conversation on August 15, 2025 between CPP President Hun Sen and Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam, during which both sides agreed to further advance the friendship and cooperation between their countries. Notably, they set a shared goal of raising bilateral trade to US$20 billion in the near future - a testament to the ever-growing vitality of Vietnam–Cambodia relations.
