California vows to build durable relationship with Vietnam
VOV.VN - Governor Gavin Newsom voiced his strong support for developing a durable relationship between California and Vietnam during his meeting with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong on November 15.
The State of California is willing to further strengthen the practical friendship and effective cooperation with Vietnam, contributing the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States as well as between California and Vietnamese localities, Newsom told his guest.
He said he is proud that California is the state that houses the most Vietnamese people living in the United States and that its San Francisco city has developed a sister city relationship with Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam.
President Thuong who is in San Francisco for the APEC Leaders’ Week 2023 recalled the recent lifting of Vietnam – US relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, and said California should seize opportunities to further promote cooperation between the two sides.
He proposed that the governor support the stablishment of more sister city relationships in future, including between Los Angeles, the largest city in California, and Vietnam’s Hanoi capital.
He also proposed that the government of California create more favourable conditions for approximately 700,000 Vietnamese expatriates in the state to integrate well into their host community.
In response, Newsom welcomed Thuong’s proposal, saying the operation of direct flights between Hanoi and San Francisco would promote people-to-people exchanges.
Meeting with Erin Bromaghim, deputy mayor of Los Angeles, on the same day, President Vo Van Thuong noted that many Los Angeles businesses have come to look for investment cooperation opportunities in Vietnam. He said he was happy about the signing of a cooperation document on seaport development in Hai Phong, the largest port city in northern Vietnam, businesses of Los Angeles and Vietnam during his current business trip to the United States.
With a coastline of 3,200km long, Vietnam holds great potential for seaport economic development, said the president, adding the signed cooperation document on seaport development would encourage cooperation in other fields between the two sides.
Bromaghim for her part said Los Angeles has received many Vietnamese business delegations to promote investment opportunities. She also revealed that another delegation of US businesses would come to sound out investment opportunities in Vietnam in the near future.
