Australian MPs voice support for expanding ties with Vietnam
VOV.VN - As relations between Vietnam and Australia continue to deepen following the upgrade of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, independent lawmakers in the Australian Parliament have expressed growing interest in expanding cooperation across trade, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
During a meeting on May 26 with Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam, independent Australian MPs, including Dai Le, Bob Katter, Andrew Gee, and Rebekha Sharkie, expressed their admiration for Vietnam’s rapid development and their desire to strengthen cooperation between localities, businesses, and legislative bodies of the two countries.
The lawmakers said they were interested in promoting stronger connectivity in trade, education, tourism, and community exchanges, while affirming their willingness to participate in activities organised by the Australia–Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group to further parliamentary cooperation.
The MPs also praised the increasingly important role of the Vietnamese community in Australia, describing it as a vital bridge for strengthening mutual understanding and bilateral cooperation.
At the meeting, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam emphasised that Vietnam–Australia relations are entering a new phase of deeper and broader cooperation with significant untapped potential.
According to the ambassador, bilateral relations have recorded positive progress in education, trade, investment, and tourism in recent years. In particular, the number of Australian tourists visiting Vietnam has continued to rise, reflecting increasingly close people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.
He also noted that Vietnam and Australia share many common strategic interests in the region, especially in promoting free trade, respecting international law, and maintaining a stable environment for development cooperation.
These shared priorities, he said, provide an important foundation for closer coordination at regional and international forums.
The Vietnamese ambassador also highlighted the growing role of the Vietnamese community in Australia. He said Vietnamese is now among the most widely spoken languages in Australia, while the Vietnamese community continues making positive contributions to the host country’s multicultural society.
At the meeting, the ambassador also praised the role of the Australia–Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group, headed by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sharon Claydon.
The group is regarded as an important bridge for promoting parliamentary cooperation and strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries amid rapidly expanding bilateral ties, he noted.
The meeting took place as Vietnam–Australia relations continue to gain momentum across multiple areas, including government cooperation, defence, trade, investment, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
