ASEAN Secretary-General praises Vietnam as a key member of the bloc
VOV.VN - ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn affirmed that Vietnam is one of the bloc’s most prominent member states, playing an increasingly important and active role in ASEAN’s community-building efforts.
Speaking during a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 26, Secretary-General Kao noted that ASEAN is entering a new phase marked by significant achievements in internal cooperation, particularly in economic integration, trade, investment, infrastructure connectivity, and power grid collaboration, all of which have been well received by external partners.
He also highlighted the challenges ASEAN faces, including peace, security, and regional development, urging all member states, including Vietnam, to work collectively to address these issues.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, for his part, expressed his appreciation for the Secretariat’s role, particularly the Secretary-General’s leadership in coordinating ASEAN’s community-building process and supporting member states, including Vietnam.
He emphasised Vietnam’s desire for the Secretariat to continue facilitating the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and strategic plans, and to enhance cooperation in science and technology, digital innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, contributing to sustainable development in Vietnam and the region.
Both leaders agreed that ASEAN must maintain internal unity, affirm its central role in addressing common challenges, increase strategic autonomy, strengthen economic connectivity, and diversify markets and partners, including in Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe.
Secretary-General Kao stressed the importance of investment in digital technology, AI, and semiconductors, alongside cultural, educational, and people-to-people cooperation, and pledged continued close collaboration to support Vietnam and other member states. He also expressed readiness to facilitate opportunities for high-quality Vietnamese professionals to work within the ASEAN Secretariat.
