ASEAN Foreign Ministers commemorate Vietnamese Party leader
VOV.VN - ASEAN Foreign Ministers and ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim-hourn, while attending a meeting in Vientiane, Laos, on July 24 observed a minute of silence in commemoration of Vietnamese Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong who passed away on July 19.
The diplomats also expressed their admiration and respect for the life, career, and great contributions of the Vietnamese leader to the country’s national construction and development, as well as to promoting friendship and cooperation in the region and the wider world.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos Saleumxay Kommasith announced that Laos will hold a national mourning on July 25 – 26 to express the boundless sadness at the passing of General Secretary
Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet, authorized by Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son to the conference, thanked the ASEAN diplomats for their condolences and sincere feelings for the government and people of Vietnam.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers on July 24 attended the meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission and the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Interface with the Representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).
These were the first activities within the framework of the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-57) and related meetings getting underway in Vientiane.
At the SEANWFZ Commission meeting, the delegates affirmed the importance of the SEANWFZ Treaty for peace, security and stability in the region. They agreed to make efforts to comprehensively implement the Treaty Action Plan for the 2023-2027 period, especially complying with Treaty commitments, and promoting nuclear-armed countries to sign the SEANWFZ Protocol.
They supported promoting the value of the Treaty at a global level, in the context of fierce strategic competition and the risk of using nuclear weapons.
During the Interface with the AICHR Representatives, the diplomats appreciated the AICHR’s efforts to increase cooperation on human rights, including the rights of people with disabilities and children’s rights.
