247 Vietnamese officers leave for UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan, Abyei

VOV.VN - As many as 247 Vietnamese officers have set off for UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei.

They include 63 officers from the Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 6 and 184 officers from Engineering Unit Rotation 3 to undertake the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

At the deployment ceremony held at Noi Bai International Airport on September 24, Major General Pham Manh Thang, director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, reported that the Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 6, and Engineering Unit Rotation 3 have completed all training and preparations. They have received all necessary vaccines to prevent diseases, as per the regulations of the United Nations and the host country’s authorities.

The Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations has coordinated with partner countries to provide in-depth specialized training for Engineering Unit Rotation 3, ensuring they have the capability to carry out engineering tasks related to infrastructure development, construction projects, and humanitarian support within the mission, as well as meeting the United Nations’ requirements based on their assigned duties, said Thang.

Speaking at the event, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan stated that the Party and State always appreciate the achievements of Vietnamese forces participating in UN peacekeeping activities, highlighting them as a bright spot in the country’s multilateral foreign relations, showcasing Vietnam’s responsibility towards the international community in addressing traditional and non-traditional challenges.

The Vice President encouraged the officers to uphold the tradition and build upon the achievements of previous peacekeeping forces to fulfil their tasks, helping to elevate the image of Vietnam and its people in the modern era.

She also expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the United Nations, partner countries, and international organizations, hoping that they would continue to support Vietnam in preparing its forces and executing missions at peacekeeping operations.

On behalf of the Party and State leadership, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan presented the national flag to representatives of Engineering Unit No. 3 and Level-2 Field Hospital No. 6 before their departure.
