Cambodian NA leader pays visit to Viettel

VOV.VN - Cambodian National Assembly (NA) President Samdech Heng Samrin led a delegation of members of the Cambodian NA on September 12 to visit the Military Telecommunications & Industry Corporation (Viettel).

Upon receiving the Cambodian guests, Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieu. Gen. Vu Hai San said that Viettel is a leading Vietnamese firm currently making investments abroad, including Cambodia. He went on to express his hope that the neighbouring country will create favourable conditions for the firm in its operations, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of Cambodia and the development of mutual ties between the two sides.

According to Col. Dao Duc Thang, chairman and general director of Viettel, the corporation has a presence in 10 countries across three continents, including Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Cameroon, Tanzania, Burundi, Peru, Haiti, and Mozambique.

Viettel has been successful in producing equipment for the use in telecommunications networks, as well as high-tech equipment for the military. In Vietnam, it is a pioneer in terms of digital transformation and has greatly contributed to building a digital society, he said.

Col. Thang said that Cambodia is the first and profitable foreign market for Viettel. Since it first provided mobile service in the market under the brand of Metfone back in 2009, Viettel has gone on to invest US$840 million in the market and has since developed into the largest telecommunication service supplier there in terms of subscribers, revenue, and network infrastructure. Last year, despite enduring the impact of the COVID-19, Viettel clinched a leading position within the Cambodian market and enjoyed its highest financial efficiency in five years.

Metfone is one of the companies with the greatest contributions made in Cambodia by generating jobs for nearly 30,000 labourers, as well as becoming a model for bilateral economic co-operation. It also highlights corporate social responsibility through its various community support activities.

Applauding the strong performance of Viettel, the Cambodian NA leader said that through Metfone, the Vietnamese firm has made great contributions to the cause of socio-economic development and telecommunication infrastructure expansion. This is in addition to digital transformation in Cambodia and creating jobs and bringing greater economic interests to the country, thereby improving the living conditions of local residents to become an example of success of the Vietnam-Cambodia partnership.

He affirmed that he will convey the various requests and recommendations of Viettel to the Cambodian Government, thus continuing to fine-tuning policies and laws, as well as creating optimal conditions for Viettel and financiers from other countries to intensify investment
