Silkie chickens are becoming a favourite pet for many Vietnamese wealthy families, with a six-month waiting list for the birds.
Ha Thi Phuong in Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi, said she bought one chick for VND2 million (US$95.2). |
Researchers said the silkie chicken originated in China. |
Nguyen Phi Long in Dong Anh District, Hanoi, said that he tried to buy a silkie chicken after seeing this kind on internet. |
After many days looking for the sellers on internet, he found one in Ho Chi Minh City. He asked to buy a pair of silkie chickens for VND20m. But the sellers ran out, and he had to wait six months. |
Nguyen Tan Dep, owner of a chicken farm in Tay Ninh Province, said three years ago he imported silkie chickens from Thailand. Each silkie chicken weighs 1.5-2kg and lives seven-to-eight years. |
Dep said silkie chickens are very friendly and easy to care for, and have become the favourite pet in many wealthy families. |
Each female silkie chiken can produce only seven-to-eight eggs in its lifetime, so has no commercial value. |
