Image: Silkie chickens attract wealthy customers in Vietnam

Silkie chickens are becoming a favourite pet for many Vietnamese wealthy families, with a six-month waiting list for the birds.

Ha Thi Phuong in Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi, said she bought one chick for VND2 million (US$95.2).
Researchers said the silkie chicken originated in China.
Nguyen Phi Long in Dong Anh District, Hanoi, said that he tried to buy a silkie chicken after seeing this kind on internet.
After many days looking for the sellers on internet, he found one in Ho Chi Minh City. He asked to buy a pair of silkie chickens for VND20m. But the sellers ran out, and he had to wait six months.
Nguyen Tan Dep, owner of a chicken farm in Tay Ninh Province, said three years ago he imported silkie chickens from Thailand. Each silkie chicken weighs 1.5-2kg and lives seven-to-eight years.
Dep said silkie chickens are very friendly and easy to care for, and have become the favourite pet in many wealthy families.
Each female silkie chiken can produce only seven-to-eight eggs in its lifetime, so has no commercial value.
