Hanoians enthralled by the pure white blooms of pears

VOV.VN - As the delicate pink petals of peach blossoms gradually fade during the passing of the first lunar month of the year, a flush of beautiful Pear (Pyrus communis) flowers emerge from their buds to delight Hanoians.

While peach blossoms are the symbol of the traditional lunar New Year festival (Tet), the flowers of pear trees are treasured by Hanoians in the weeks after Tet.

Hanoians often seek out vintage pear trees overgrown with green moss, old branches, and thick trunks.

Local traders in Quang Ba flower market in Tay Ho district, Hanoi says the branches of wild pear trees are often transported from northern mountainous provinces such as Lang Son, Son La, and Lao Cai.

The price of pear blossoms is more expensive than last year, ranging from VND1-2 million for a big branch. Small branches to display at the ancestral altar can trade for VND100,000-200,000 each.

A local trader in Nhat Tan flower village in Tay Ho district says he imported 40 pear tree stumps from Lang Son province, 15 of the 40 tree stumps were bought by regular customers.

Pear blossom is a symbol of filial devotion of descendants towards grandparents and ancestors.

Pear flowers stay in bloom for10-20 days. Some branches with many buds can be displayed in houses for several months.

At Quang Ba flower market, delivery services are provided to customers.

Hanoians are currently scurrying about to buy a branch of fresh pear blossoms for the fifteenth day of the first lunar month (March 2).
