Children’s future in fishing villages

(VOV) - Most children living in Vung Vieng and Cua Van fishing villages, part of Quang Ninh province’s Ha Long City, leave school after finishing the fifth grade.

Their life on the sea makes boats their houses
and the bay their homeland.

Many learn to swim and pilot rafts before learning to write.

However, they are hospitable

…. and smile when invited to join in conversations

They take swimming and boat racing as their enjoyable hobbies

But the children are also eager to learn. The village has three classrooms, a library and small rooms for teachers.

Classes are offered from first to fifth grade levels. Pursuing education further requires moving inland, a change few are willing to make.

In Cua Van village, 6 young teachers guide approximately 50 pupils through to the fifth grade. They also organise one junior secondary class.

Teachers must work ceaselessly to persuade parents their children should be permitted to attend school.
