VOV.VN - With Lunar New Year rapidly drawing near, pottery workshops in Tan Uyen town in the southern province of Binh Duong are working at full capacity to meet customers’ demand.

As locals celebrate the Year of the Cat, artisans working in Tan Phuoc Khanh commune of Tan Uyen town in southern Vietnam are fully focused on making clay models depicting the animal.

Binh Duong's 200-year-old pottery-making craft has been officially recognised as an intangible part of national cultural heritage. Dozens of households here continue to follow the traditional method of producing ceramic products.

A workshop is at its busiest ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, known locally as Tet, that falls on January 21 this year, with thousands of products being churned out daily.

Doraemon-shaped pottery products are the favourites with customers this year.

Some products are used as money boxes for children.

After an hour out in the sun, the cat models are shaped, hardened, and removed from their molds. The workshop uses around one tonne of clay and other materials every day.

Clay products are fully decorated prior to the delivery. Craftmen make use of powder paint because of its durability and fast drying capability. All products are then typically coated with a layer of gold glitter.

This year there are two sizes of cats available in the market; small and big. The wholesale price for one piece hovers between VND100,000 and VND600,000.

These cats are expected to bring luck to customers ahead in the new year.
