Late Greek Hero Kostas Sarantidis buried at final resting place in Vietnam

Kostas Sarantidis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1927. He was forced to serve in the Nazi dictatorship in 1943 and the French army in Vietnam in February 1946. (In the photo, comrades extend their condolences to the relatives of the Greek Hero at the memorial service).

In June 1946, he escaped from the French Foreign Legion to a free area in Binh Thuan province where he joined the Viet Minh forces against the French colonialists. (In the photo, a delegation of the Da Nang municipal administration pay tribute to the late hero).

For his great contributions, Kostas Sarantidis was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1949. (In the photo, Vietnamese officers of the Command of Military Zone 5 pay their respect to the late hero).

After the 1954 Geneva Accords, he travelled to the North where he took part in a movement to protest against the enemy forcing Northerners to migrate to the South. (In the photo, some of the elderly comrades pay tribute to Hero of the People’s Armed Forces Kostas Sarantidis).

In 1965, Kostas Sarantidis and his family returned to Greece to live with his mother. He joined the Communist Party of Greece, and acted to build and cultivate the good friendship between the two countries. He was presented with many noble awards by the Vietnamese Party and State, including the title “Hero of the Vietnam People’s Armed Forces’ in 2013. He was particularly given Vietnamese citizenship by the Vietnamese state in 2010. (In the photo, his coffin is covered with the national flag of Vietnam).

Kostas Sarantidis passed away at on June 24, 2021, at his home in Greece. Under his will, the Vietnamese Government in collaboration with the Greek Government and his family transferred his ashes to Vietnam for burial.
