Hungarian NA Speaker Laszlo Kover’s Vietnam visit in the spotlight

Upon arriving at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City, on October 18, Speaker Laszlo Kover meets with Vo Van Minh, Deputy Secretary of the HCM City Party Committee and Chairman of the HCM City People’s Council.

During the meeting, Speaker Kover notes the impressive development of HCM City since his last visit a decade ago. He affirms Hungary’s support for businesses exploring opportunities in Vietnam, particularly in HCM City, and expresses hope for greater cooperation between local authorities and Hungarian enterprises.

Later on October 20, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man hosts an official welcoming ceremony for Speaker Kover, and the two leaders then hold bilateral talks.

Speaker Kover reaffirms Hungary’s “Eastern Opening” foreign policy and considers Vietnam its most important partner in Southeast Asia. Both sides agree to strengthen exchanges between parliamentary leaders, committees, and friendship groups, and to promote oversight of high-level agreements.

After the talks, Speaker Kover and his entourage attend a session of the 10th sitting of Vietnam’s 15th National Assembly. That evening, Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn hosts an official banquet in honor of the Hungarian delegation.

On the same day, State President Luong Cuong receives Speaker Kover. Both sides agree to further cooperation in trade, defence, science, education, culture, and tourism. Kover pledges Hungary’s continued support for the EU-vietnam investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) ratification and urges the EU to lift the "yellow card" on Vietnamese seafood.

Speaker Kover also meets with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh who proposes raising bilateral trade to US$2 billion and strengthening legal frameworks for cooperation. Kover affirms the Hungarian legislature’s support for government collaboration to formulate and finalise the legal framework for bilateral cooperation.
