Cao Xiem Mt. where forests, clouds, and culture meet in Northern Vietnam

Located in Luc Hon commune, Cao Xiem Mountain rises to an elevation of 1,429 meters above sea level and is considered the highest peak in Quang Ninh. This remote and untouched mountain landscape is part of the scenic trekking journey through Binh Lieu, where travelers are drawn to its rugged beauty and layered forested peaks.

First organised by the People’s Committee of Luc Hon Commune on May 9–10, the Cao Xiem Mountain trekking experience programme is part of a key initiative to develop a pilot trekking tour, conduct field surveys, and promote Cao Xiem as a new adventure tourism product centred on conquering the mountain’s summit in Quang Ninh.

The journey to conquer Cao Xiem is not only a test of physical endurance but also an immersive exploration of untouched nature. Starting from the foot of the mountain, travelers begin a trekking route that winds through the distinctive star anise forests of Luc Hon Commune. Before departure, each participant is briefed on safety guidelines, health precautions, and environmental protection rules to ensure a responsible trekking experience.

The traditional houses of the Tay, Dao, and San Chi ethnic groups, nestled among vast star anise forests, offer an intriguing stop along the journey. There, visitors have the opportunity to explore and experience the rich cultural heritage and daily life of local residents.

Learning about wild vegetables and medicinal herbs is a refreshing and novel experience for many visitors. As the ascent continues, the air becomes increasingly pure and crisp, gradually revealing sweeping panoramic views of the majestic borderlands of Northeast Vietnam.

“Cao Xiem is still a relatively untouched and beautiful trekking destination. The trail winds through fragrant star anise forests. Standing on the mountaintop, with a sea of clouds drifting right before my eyes, is truly an unforgettable experience,” shares Pham Ngoc Dung, a traveler from Ha Long.

“I have been to Cao Xiem many times, but this visit is especially impressive for its cultural experience. We gathered around a campfire, listened to Then singing and San Co folk songs, and enjoyed local cuisine. The warmth and simplicity of the people in Luc Hon are a great highlight that will definitely make me come back with my friends,” says Vu Thi Quynh, a traveler from Duong Hoa Commune.

The Cao Xiem experiential tour is developed under a community-based tourism model, aiming to become a signature product of Luc Hon Commune. Through partnerships with travel agencies, local authorities are gradually building a complete service chain, from transportation and trekking guidance to camping experiences and the exploration of indigenous cultural values. Notably, Keeping the environment clean, minimising impacts on the natural forest ecosystem, and raising visitors’ awareness of landscape conservation remain key priorities throughout the development of the programme.

Ngo Van Mau, vice chairman of the Luc Hon Commune People’s Committee, says the local administration is currently reviewing and preparing infrastructure and human resources to implement this tourism model. Once the pilot tour is finalised, Luc Hon Commune plans to organise Cao Xiem trekking tours on a more regular basis, with the aim of establishing Cao Xiem as a distinctive and memorable destination on the adventure tourism map of Vietnam’s Northeast highlands in Quang Ninh.
